Recognizes the steam powered ships running the blockade mainly between Wilmington and Bermuda or Nassau. Only 570 miles from Nassau, a steamer could travel to Wilmington in 48 hours. Named because Fort Fisher was the largest coastal fortification in the Confederacy. The mighty fort was armed with 44 pieces of heavy artillery, including long-range artillery mounted atop a 43-foot-high seacoast battery which was protected by an innovative field of land mines. The Fort’s namesake was Charles F. Fisher, colonel of the 6th Regiment North Carolina troops and the first Tar Heel field officer killed in the war’s first major battle at (Manassas/Bull Run), Virginia on July 21, 1961.
