From 1941 to 1944, Fort Fisher was home to a US Army Anti-Aircraft Artillery training base.
Forty-seven Anti-Aircraft Battalions arrived to conduct live firing exercises on targets being towed across the sky. In many cases, this was the last training opportunity before these soldiers were sent to the European or Pacific Theaters of Operation. were here to learn to shoot down enemy aircraft from the sky.
